Intriguing magnetoelectric effect in two-dimensional ferromagnetic/perovskite oxide ferroelectric heterostructure

Two-dimensional (2D) magnets have broad application prospects in the spintronics, but how to effectively control them with a small electric field is still an issue. Here we propose that 2D can be efficiently controlled multiferroic heterostructure composed of magnetic material and perovskite oxide ferroelectric (POF) whose dielectric polarization easily flipped under field. We illustrate feasibility such strategy bilayer CrI3/BiFeO3(001) by using first-principles calculations. Different from traditional POF heterostructures which strong interface interactions, find interaction between CrI3 BiFeO3(001) van der Waals type. Whereas, has particular magnetoelectric coupling where switched ferromagnetic antiferromagnetic types polarized states BiFeO3(001). also discover competing effect electron doping additional on interlayer exchange CrI3, responsible phase transition. Our results provide new avenue for tuning
